The history of Mazda dates back to 1920, where it began as Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., LTD. The company was founded in Hiroshima, Japan. The company started out producing machine tools, and in 1931, it sold three-wheel pickup trucks and small vehicles in the Japanese market. They began making small four-wheeled trucks in 1950s. The first passenger car, the R360 coupe, was launched in 1960. The brand finally launched in the American market in 1970 with the R100 coupe. This was the first mass-produced rotary-powered car in the U.S. The RX-7 was an affordable peak-performing sports car released in 1978 and in 1979 Ford Motor Company took a 25% stake in the company. Throughout the years, Mazda experienced many milestones, from the 2000 “Guinness Book of World Records” naming the Miata the best-selling two-seat convertible in history to the Mazda 787 B winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans Race in 1991. In 2015, they produced 1.5 million vehicles for global sales.
