How Belts Work

Belts move parts mechanically. Your serpentine belt and drive belts, for example, move the many components of your alternator, power steering system, and more. Your timing belt or timing chain, on the other hand, rotates your camshaft, keeping your engine's valves and pistons moving in sync.

How Hoses Work

Hoses move parts using liquid pressure. Your radiator hoses, for instance, move coolant back and forth between your radiator and engine. Heater core hoses, on the other hand, pass coolant through your car HVAC system, helping warm your cabin. If you drive an older Lexus, fuel hoses might connect your engine and gas tank. Your brake hoses push brake fluid through your brake lines to brake calipers and brake pads, a process that clamps them to your brake rotors.
