The origins of Audi, the German automobile manufacturer, go back to the early 1900’s. August Horch founded Horch & Cie., where he built his first car. He formed a second car company named after the Latin translation of his name, Audi. The four rings on the emblem symbolize the merging of four companies. Audi merged with Horch, DKW, and Wanderer in 1932 to form Auto Union AG. When these companies merged, the Auto Union AG was the second largest motor vehicle manufacturer in Germany. The four rings were representative of the unity of the founder companies. The group presented an Audi at the 1933 Berlin Motor Show, which boosted their popularity in the racing scene. There were a lot of different milestones throughout the brand’s history, including the development of the Audi 100 in 1968. The 100 was the basis for a new model series that helped the brand establish their independence as a luxury car marque.
